it takes some getting used to expression definition

This wonderful expression is a somewhat more advanced version of a simple ‘you need to get used to it’, I would say. I recently heard our gym instructor saying it about a new move or sequence.

Some more examples:

– Communicating via webcam may be the ideal way to keep in touch, but they take some getting used to (The Guardian).

– Electric cars are going to take some getting used to (The Economist).

– It can take some getting used to, if you move directly from one society to the other without anaesthesia or a period of adaptation (The Economist).
